ANNOUNCEMENT OF INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN'S HEALTH GRANT PROGRAM

National Institute of Child Health and Human Development

In cooperation with the National Institute of Child Health and Human 
Development (NICHD), and as part of a larger program of UN system 
support, the United Nations Foundation (UNF) will accept proposals for 
collaborative multi-year research falling within the priority area 
�Decreasing Child Mortality.�  This priority area includes: 1) 
preventing HIV/AIDS among children and youth, 2) understanding the 
association of micronutrients with low birth weight and Zinc with child 
mortality/morbidity, 3) supporting sustainable vaccine delivery, and, 
4) strengthening community knowledge about the needs of ill children.  
For proposals in all the above listed sub-areas except #2, these 
research collaborations should involve investigators and/or co-
investigators in Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, 
Zambia and/or Zimbabwe.  Research in sub-area #2 (micronutrients and 
zinc) can involve investigators and/or co-investigators in any 
�appropriate developing country.�     

Investigators interested in applying for support through this program 
should contact a UN system organization (i.e. WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, 
UNAIDS, etc.) office in the country where the research will occur.  
Proposals must be submitted through a UN system organization.  Internal 
procedures, and submission and review requirements may vary depending 
on the organization.  Proposals must comply with UNF Guidelines and 
must be submitted on UNF Project Review Forms (PRFs).   These and other 
background documents are available on the UNF website 
(http://www.unfoundation.org) and from UN offices.

Meritorious proposals that fall within the mandate of NICHD, especially 
collaborative proposals, may be co-funded with NICHD resources 
following NICHD review and approval, and consultation with UNF.  It is 
the intent of the program to make awards that encourage on-going 
international research collaboration and research that facilitates the 
translation of biomedical and behavioral study findings into effective 
and sustainable public health interventions.  

Completed PRFs are due at the UNF-affiliated UN Fund for International 
Partnerships (UNFIP) office in New York by September 7, 1999.  Letters 
of intent should be submitted by August 18, 1999, to UNFPA through a UN 
system organization.  It is anticipated that grants will be awarded by 
the end of calendar year 1999.
