prior approval by NCCAM. In reference to the above, applications received
without an indication of prior NCCAM concurrence and identification of the
NCCAM contact will be returned to the applicant without review. (refer to
"Acceptance for Review of Unsolicited Applications That Request More Than
$500,000 Direct Costs," NIH Guide, March 20, 1998)

For the purposes of this Notice, NCCAM defines Phase III clinical trials as
the following: A Phase III trial is a broadly based prospective investigation
usually involving a substantial number of human subjects. The primary
objective of such trials is to evaluate an experimental intervention in
comparison with a standard or control intervention, or to compare two or more
existing treatments. The definition includes interventions given for disease
prevention, prophylaxis, diagnosis, or therapy. Community trials and other
population-based intervention trials are also included.
