NCCAM GUIDELINES FOR INVESTIGATOR-INITIATED APPLICATIONS Release Date: January 29, 1999 P.T. National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine PURPOSE "The general purposes of the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) are the conduct and support of basic and applied research . . . research training, . . . and other programs with respect to identifying, investigating, and validating complementary and alternative treatment, diagnostic, and prevention modalities, disciples and systems" (P.L. 105-277). In order to meet this congressional mandate, NCCAM is accepting investigator- initiated applications for all types of research (e.g., basic, clinical, epidemiological and health services) using the following award mechanisms: F31 Pre-doctoral Individual National Research Service Awards F32 Post-doctoral Individual National Research Service Awards K01 Research Scientist Development Award K02 Independent Scientist Award K07 Academic Career Award K08 Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award K12 Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award Program K22 Career Transition Award K23 Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award K24 Midcareer Investigator Award in Patient-Oriented Research P01 Research Program Project grants (restrictions apply - see below) R01 Research Project (Traditional) (restrictions apply to Phase III Clinical Trials - see below) R15 Academic Research Enhancement Award R21 Exploratory/Developmental grants (restrictions apply -see below) R41 Small Business Technology Transfer Grant (STTR) - Phase I R42 Small Business Technology Transfer Grant (STTR) - Phase II R43 Small Business Innovation Research Grant (SBIR) - Phase I R44 Small Business Innovation Research Grant (SBIR) - Phase II T32 Institutional National Research Service Award Applications for these awards should follow standard National Institute of Health guidelines and receipt dates. Applications are also available on the World Wide Web at https://grants.nih.gov/grants/forms.htm. Applications for Phase III clinical trials, for Research Program Project grants (P01), for Exploratory/Developmental grants (R21) or for any grant in excess of $500,000 direct costs in one or more years of the award require prior approval by NCCAM. In reference to the above, applications received without an indication of prior NCCAM concurrence and identification of the NCCAM contact will be returned to the applicant without review. (refer to "Acceptance for Review of Unsolicited Applications That Request More Than $500,000 Direct Costs," NIH Guide, March 20, 1998) For the purposes of this Notice, NCCAM defines Phase III clinical trials as the following: A Phase III trial is a broadly based prospective investigation usually involving a substantial number of human subjects. The primary objective of such trials is to evaluate an experimental intervention in comparison with a standard or control intervention, or to compare two or more existing treatments. The definition includes interventions given for disease prevention, prophylaxis, diagnosis, or therapy. Community trials and other population-based intervention trials are also included.
