This policy was published previously in the NIH GUIDE, Vol. 22, No.

45, December 17, 1993.  Investigators planning to submit

investigator-initiated applications for research grants requesting

more than $500,000 in direct costs in any year are advised that it is

important to contact appropriate Institute/Center staff as they begin

to develop plans for the study.  Applications received without prior

staff contact may be delayed in the review process or returned to the

applicant without review.  Applicants who are uncertain regarding

which Institute/Center to contact should call the Referral Office,

Division of Research Grants (301-425-0714).
