The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS),

under a Broad Agency Announcement (BAA)/Request For Proposals (RFP),

is soliciting proposals for developing transgenic rats as an

experimental model for the study of cerebral ischemia and stroke in

the central nervous system. The term 'transgenic rat' is used here

broadly to include rats that demonstrate overexpression of genes,

deletion of genes (gene knock-out), or alteration in the expression

patterns of genes that may be involved in the cellular injury or

repair of brain cells within the central nervous system following

cerebral ischemia. Independent design and construction of transgenic

rats for research concerning the diagnosis, pathophysiology,

pathogenesis, treatment and/or prevention of stroke is required.

Offerors are required to have existing, appropriate and available

transgenic research facilities. Performance of work under this

project will involve personnel with established expertise in

molecular biology, neurosciences, molecular genetics, and physiology.

It is anticipated that two multi-year cost-reimbursement type

contracts will be awarded for a maximum period of four years each.

This is not a Request for Proposals. Request for Proposals (RFP) No.

NIH-NINDS-95-11 will be issued on or about February 17, 1995 as a

Broad Agency Announcement as defined in FAR 6.102(d)(2) and 35.016.

Proposals will be due approximately sixty days after issuance of the

BAA/RFP.
