The National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) announces a limited competition for competing continuation applications from current grantees of the RCMI Clinical Research Infrastructure Initiative (RCRII) program. The RCRII program was established to augment and strengthen the institutional clinical research capabilities at NCRR- supported Research Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMIs) affiliated with medical schools. An RCRII grant supports the infrastructure needed to develop a clinical research center that supports clinical studies particularly those that focus on diseases that disproportionately affect the populations served by the host institutions. The RCRII also enhances the ability of investigators at the medical schools to successfully compete for independent investigator-initiated NIH research grant support or other external peer-reviewed support. This competition will allow RCRII award recipients to continue the establishment of the resources and infrastructure necessary to maintain the RCRII centers. Long-range, it is anticipated that the RCRII program will facilitate the development of the institution's clinical research capacity and allow them to successfully compete for non-RCMI support of a clinical research center.

The deadline for receipt of applications is February 14, 2005. Support is contingent on availability of funds and eligibility is restricted to institutions with current RCRII awards. NCRR staff will contact the current awardees regarding application procedures and format. Written and telephone inquiries concerning this may be directed to:
