Common Fund (Roadmap)
The National Institutes of Health Common Fund intends to
promote a new initiative by publishing a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA)
to solicit applications for development and implementation of a Coordinating
Center (CCC) as part of the HMO Collaboratory. (See http://nihroadmap.nih.gov/hmocollaboratory/.)
This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to
develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects. The
eligibility to apply in response to this FOA is limited to members of the HMO
Research Network (HMORN). This limited competition will allow consortium
agreement(s) with non-HMORN members. Applicants are encouraged to partner with
organizations with particular expertise in data integration.
The FOA is expected to be published in the winter of 2011 with an expected
receipt date in the spring of 2011.
This FOA will utilize the U54 activity code. Details of the planned Funding
Opportunity Announcement (FOA) are provided below.
This Notice
encourages investigators with expertise and insights into the area of
distributed network infrastructure evaluation and development to begin to
consider applying for this new FOA. Collaboratives combining expertise in
informatics, electronic health records, biorepositories, biostatistics,
mega-epidemiology, economics, decision analysis, ethics, pragmatic clinical
trials, comparative effectiveness research, behavioral science, environmental
health, and health policy will be encouraged and these investigators should
also begin considering applying for this application.
The Collaboratory Coordinating Center is expected to significantly exceed the
breadth, scope, and complexity of the previously funded limited infrastructure
support of the HMO Research Network (HMORN). The long term goal of the NIH
Common Fund Collaboratory project is to strengthen the capacity, capability and
cost-effectiveness of large and/or multi-site studies by making use of primary
clinical data and samples in a distributed network of integrated health care
delivery organizations. The overall goals of the Collaboratory Coordinating
Center may include: evaluating and advancing the governance, quality, use, depth
and scale of electronic data and biospecimen collection, as well as operational
infrastructure for clinical and health services delivery research. This
infrastructure will ultimately serve researchers to efficiently generate new
evidence on the effectiveness, or comparative effectiveness, of healthcare
interventions. This work will substantially enhance the Nation’s capability and
capacity to systematically collect and curate prospective and retrospective
data that will inform research in populations typically under-represented in
randomized controlled clinical trials, such as patients with multiple
co-morbidities, extremes of age, rural populations, and minorities.
