Purpose

Recognizing the need to develop more effective behavioral treatments for patients with multiple chronic health conditions, the Trans-NIH Integrated Health Strategies Working Group held a workshop at the NIH campus in April 2010 to identify research priorities and gaps. This meeting highlighted the need for more effective research methods and measures for conceptualizing, triaging and assessing the health behavior (e.g., adherence, mental health problems, diet and exercise, substance use/abuse disorders) of patients with multiple chronic health conditions. 

The purpose of this Notice is to draw attention to an existing NIH funding opportunity announcement (FOA) that investigators might use to obtain support for this research. More specifically, researchers are encouraged to utilize program announcement PAR-08-212 [Methodology and Measurement in the Behavioral and Social Sciences (R01)]. Examples of measurement areas of particular interest for this announcement include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Development and refinement of measures, instruments, or surveys that fill a gap in assessing multiple chronic health behaviors in behavioral and social science research.
• Measurement issues in using technology, such as computer assisted data collection, web-based technology, mobile phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs).
• Development of instruments that assess not only degree of multiple behavior change, but also rate and variable direction of change in multiple health behaviors.
• Development of behavioral and social science measures that can be used for efficient data collection for assessment, triage, and/or outcomes research in clinical practice-based, research networks.
