Purpose

The National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) and the Department of Commerce National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announce the availability of a standard reference material (SRM) for the analysis of circulating vitamin D.

The SRM will provide a material with stable, well-defined levels of the analytes of interest and will serve as a reproducible point of comparison, of results across laboratories and within a given laboratory over time. Investigators can use the SRM to validate new analytical methods as they are developed and to assign values to in-house quality-control materials. This standard reference material, (SRM 972 Vitamin D in Human Serum), consists of four pools of fresh-frozen serum. Each pool has a different level of 25(OH)D2, 25(OH)D3, or both. One pool also contains 3-epi-25(OH)D3. The development of this SRM was a joint effort between NIST and the ODS.

Quality Assurance Program Participation

Investigators also have the opportunity to participate in an ODS-funded NIST quality assurance program for analysis of vitamin D metabolites in human serum (e.g., 25(OH)D2  and 25(OH)D3).  NIST chemists will compile data and provide confidential feedback to the laboratory on their performance values relative to expected values. Participation in this quality assurance program will demonstrate the laboratory’s proficiency for assessment of vitamin D status. There is no fee for participation (nor will study participants be paid to participate).

NIST has other SRM’s available of value to manufacturers and clinical trialists who currently have no definitive, independently certified standard with which to verify their testing methods and calibrate their equipment.
