DELAYS IN GRANT APPLICATION SUBMISSION DUE TO FIRES IN CALIFORNIA

RELEASE DATE: October 29, 2003

NOTICE: NOT-OD-04-003

National Institutes of Health (NIH)

The fires in Southern California have led to the closure of a number of
institutions in the area. The NIH realizes that this may cause problems for
investigators from those institutions and their collaborators at other places
who are planning on submitting grant applications for the November 1, 2003
date (actually November 3 because of the weekend). Applications that are
submitted late because of problems caused by fires should include a cover
letter noting the reasons for the delay. It is not necessary to get
permission in advance for such delays in grant application submission. It is
expected that the delay will generally not exceed the time period that an
institution is closed.
