Purpose

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), with the NIH Office of Rare Diseases Research (ORDR), intend to publish a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to solicit applications for research on rare diseases via the Rare Diseases Clinical Research Network. This FOA will be a limited competition made available only to the current American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA)-supported Rare Disease Clinical Research Consortia awardees. 

This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects. 

The FOA is expected to be published in the winter of 2011 with a receipt date in the spring of 2011.

This FOA will utilize the U54 activity code. Details of the planned FOA are provided below.

Research Initiative Details

This Notice encourages investigators with expertise and insights into the area of rare neurological disorders to begin to consider applying for this limited competition FOA. The objective is to facilitate clinical research in rare diseases through support for: 1) collaborative clinical research in rare diseases, including longitudinal studies of individuals with rare diseases, clinical studies and/or phase I, II and II/III trials; 2) training of clinical investigators in rare diseases research; 3) pilot and demonstration projects; and 4) access to information related to rare diseases for basic and clinical researchers, academic and practicing physicians, patients, and the lay public. The total project period for an application submitted in response to this FOA may not exceed 3 years.
