NINDS ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPLEMENTS FOR RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE FOR NEURO-AIDS RESEARCH PROJECTS Release Date: August 30, 2001 NOTICE: NOT-NS-01-013 National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) announces an administrative supplement program to enhance infrastructure of neuro-AIDS research projects. The program is intended to further research on neuro-AIDS for ongoing, peer-reviewed neuro-AIDS research projects. Principal Investigators (PIs) with Research Project (R01), exploratory/development (R21), FIRST (R29), Program Project (P01), and Specialized Center (P50, U54) grants and Collaborative Neurological Science Awards (S11) funded by NINDS are eligible to apply. To be eligible, projects must have a Project Period End Date of August 31, 2002 or later (a no cost extension beyond that date does not confer eligibility). In addition, grants must not have received an administrative supplement within the past 12 months nor received an infrastructure supplement under the program announced in NOT-98-166. We have mailed this announcement directly to those we believe are eligible for this program. If you feel that you meet the eligibility requirements but were not contacted directly, please contact one of the program officials listed at the end of this announcement. The principal focus of this announcement is to support the purchase of equipment that could not be purchased because of previous budgetary constraints, although requests for other non-recurring infrastructure support that will enhance the ongoing NINDS-funded neuro-AIDS research will be considered. Evidence should be presented that the supplement will significantly enhance the pursuit of the existing Specific Aims of the participating research project, without constituting an expansion of scope. Descriptions should be concise, but sufficiently detailed to make clear how the supplemental funds will enhance the ongoing research project. How to apply: Submission of requests should be made electronically. Send an email message to hivsupplements@ninds.nih.gov with the PI's name (last name, first name) and grant number (e.g., R01NS01234-05) on the Subject line. Include the following sections in an attached file in MSWord format: 1) A cover letter citing this NOTICE and requesting an administrative supplement, including the PI name, grant number and title, amount requested, name and title of the institutional official, and phone, email, and address information for the PI and institutional official. For P01s, P50s, and U54s, the named PI must submit the request for a supplement. 2) A description of the project (up to 2 pages), including an Abstract, a Description of the experiments which will be enhanced by the infrastructure supplement and their relationship to the original project Specific Aims including a discussion of the Impact that the supplement will have on the overall project, and a Budget with justification. 3) A list of other support for the PI and key personnel. 4) Specific Aims from the original grant. PIs should not submit a request electronically until the institutional business office has reviewed and approved the request. Applicants unable to submit an electronic application should submit a complete written application addressed to Dr. Kozlowski postmarked no later than September 6, 2001. Following electronic submission, an original cover letter signed by the PI and countersigned by an authorized institutional official, which is required for issuance of an award, must be sent by mail or fax to the NINDS program staff contact listed at the end of this notice. Please submit only once, either via mail or by fax. Budget information: Supplements will be awarded as TOTAL COSTS in increments of $25,000. For R01s, R21s, R29s, and S11s, the maximum request is $50,000. For P01s, P50s, and U54s, the maximum is $100,000. Applicants should provide a budget justification that details the budget items requested. Review procedure: Applications will be reviewed administratively.
