NINDS EXPLORATORY/DEVELOPMENTAL GRANT (R21) PROGRAM

National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke

PURPOSE

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) 
invites applications for Exploratory/Developmental (R21) Grants 
relevant to its research mission. The R21 Grant mechanism is intended 
to support innovative, high impact research projects.  Such projects 
would either 1) generate pilot data to assess the feasibility of a 
novel avenue of investigation 2) involve high risk experiments that 
could lead to a breakthrough in a particular field or 3) demonstrate 
the feasibility of new technologies that could have major impact in a 
specific area.  To be eligible for consideration, proposals must be 
distinct from those traditionally submitted through the R01 mechanism.  
For example, projects designed to produce incremental advances in 
knowledge in a well-established area will not be considered.  Proposals 
submitted under this mechanism should be limited to those with the 
potential for truly ground-breaking impact.

Applicants for an R21 award may request direct costs of up to $125,000 
per year for a maximum of two years. This award is not renewable.  
Applications should be submitted on the grant application form PHS 398 
(rev. 4/98).  However, the Research Plan for an R21 proposal need not 
include preliminary data and should be limited to 15 pages (no 
appendices permitted).  Initial peer review will be conducted by the 
relevant study section in the NINDS Scientific Review Branch.   For
