The National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) is expanding the categories of applicants who are considered underrepresented in nursing research. The 2004 National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses (NSSRN; http://bhpr.hrsa.gov/healthworkforce/reports/rnpopulation/preliminaryfindings.htm) found that of the 2.9 million licensed RNs living and working in the US, less than 6% are male. Male and female nurses seek advance training (i.e., a master’s or doctoral degree) at approximately the same rate (13%). Thus, approximately 2% of nurses with advanced degrees are male. This demographic reflects a significant under representation of male nurse investigators conducting research.
Thus, for the purposes of all training and career development awards, as well as for requests for supplemental support of underrepresented populations, NINR will now consider a male nurse as underrepresented, regardless of racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic background.
NINR is committed to training new investigators and to extending science by integrating the biological and behavioral sciences, with attention to strategies for encouraging young investigators and members of groups underrepresented in science. Individuals interested in learning more about NINR’s support for research training (http://www.ninr.nih.gov/Training/) or research opportunities designed to promote diversity (http://www.ninr.nih.gov/ResearchAndFunding/DEA/OEP/FundingOpportunities/DiversityprogFile.htm#career) are encouraged to visit the NINR website (http://www.ninr.nih.gov/).
