LIMITED COMPETITIVE CONTINUATION FOR AHRQ'S CENTERS FOR EDUCATION AND RESEARCH PROGRAM Release Date: January 9, 2002 NOTICE: NOT-HS-02-002 RECEIPT DATE: March 28, 2002 Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (http://www.ahrq.gov) This notice informs the research community that the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) will be requesting competitive renewal applications from the four Centers for Education and Research on Therapeutics (CERTs) for which it provided initial funding in Fiscal Year 1999. The CERTs program was established with the NIH Guide release of RFA-HS-99-004 on January 27, 1999, and was incorporated into the AHRQ Reauthorization Act of 1999 (P.L. 106-129). The mission of the CERTs program is to provide objective scientific information on the safe and effective use of therapeutics, defined as drugs, devices, and biologics. The purpose of the competitive renewals is to provide funds for existing centers to build on work in progress and to expand their work to: a) address existing gaps within the overall CERTs program including pharmacoeconomics and cost effectiveness analyses, and b) develop additional projects within the overarching Center theme that complement current AHRQ research priorities and response to the needs of programs of the Department of Health and Human Services. The CERTs program is mandated by Congress. Because the existing CERTs recipients possess the infrastructure, leadership, organization, and multidisciplinary research objectives to enable them to build on the existing work to address existing gaps and to develop additional projects, and because continuity in the research is necessary, this will be a limited competition. In addition, ongoing evaluations of the CERTs demonstration activities require that a longer period of funding be in place for the current awardees in order to determine the appropriate structure for the permanent Agency program.
