Purpose

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) intends to issue a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) for Short-Term Institutional Training Grants in Pediatric Respiratory,
Hematology/Transfusion Medicine or Sleep Research.  These programs will develop and enhance research training opportunities for medical students to encourage them, early in their careers, to consider pursuing a career in basic or clinical research in pediatric pulmonary, hematology, transfusion medicine, or sleep medicine.

The Program Director should have experience in one of the listed scientific areas; a productive research background; a successful training record; and also the skills, knowledge, and resources to conduct the proposed training program.

The applicant institution must have a high-quality research program in pediatric respiratory, blood or sleep disorders or transfusion medicine and must have the staff and facilities to conduct the proposed research training.

The program will provide stipends for 2 to 3 months to trainees to cover living expenses during the research training experience.  For the duration of the training the students will be required to devote at least 40 hours per week to the program.  Training Related Expenses in proportion to the NRSA standard annual Training Related Expenses, housing and traveling funds will also be part of the award.

This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop their program   The FOA is expected to be published in the early Spring of 2011 with an expected receipt date in the Summer of 2011.
