Purpose

On October 12, 2010, the NHLBI issued a Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOA): RFA-HL-11-032 (Utilization of a Human Lung Tissue Resource for Vascular Research (R03)), http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-HL-11-032.html.

The following corrections to this FOA are being made:

OLD LANGUAGE: paragraph 1.
Applications must be submitted electronically following the instructions described in the SF 424 (R&R) Application Guide. Paper applications will not be accepted.

Applicants requesting use of PHBI resources: At the time of application, the Principal Investigator of the proposed study must also provide documentation from the PHBI that all biospecimens and data required for the proposed research are available. This documentation must be in the form of a support letter from the PHBI included with the application (include in 2. Research Plan Attachments:,14. Letters of Support). This letter will not affect the scientific merit review, it will only confirm that the PHBI will be able to provide the needed resources for the duration of the R03 support period should the application be deemed meritorious and competitive for funding. To obtain the letter of support, the PI must contact the PHBI Databank and Coordinating Center (mjessup@med.umich.edu) no later than 6 weeks prior to the application receipt dates (January 14, 2011; October 14, 2011 for the first and second application receipt dates, respectively).
Applicants proposing to use non-PHBI sources of tissues: Documentation of availability of tissues must be included in the application (include in 2. Research Plan Attachments:, 14. Letters of Support).

Applications will be assigned to the appropriate NIH Institute or Center. Applications will compete for available funds with all other recommended applications submitted in response to this FOA . Following initial peer review, recommended applications will receive a second level of review by the NHLBI Advisory Council . The following will be considered in making funding decisions:

  • Scientific and technical merit of the proposed project as determined by scientific peer review.
  • Availability of funds.
  • Relevance of the proposed project to program priorities.
