Notice Number: NOT-HL-09-126

Key Dates
Release Date: September 8, 2009

Issued by
National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), (http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov)

The purpose of this Notice is to announce NHLBI’s intention to issue a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) in the Fall of 2009 to fund up to five Summer Institute awards and one Coordination Core award in fiscal year 2010. This FOA is intended to support institutions/organizations to conduct Summer Institute programs to enable faculty and scientists from diverse backgrounds to further develop their research skills and knowledge, thus enhancing their career development as faculty members or scientists.  The primary goal of the Programs to Increase Diversity Among Individuals Engaged in Research (PRIDE) is to encourage scientists and research-oriented faculty from groups that are currently underrepresented in science (e.g., underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities, or individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds) to enhance their research skills and to gain experience in advanced methods and experimental approaches in basic and applied sciences relevant to heart, lung, blood, and sleep disorders. The desired outcome is to increase the pool of highly trained investigators from diverse backgrounds who can successfully compete for external funding for scientific research. This FOA will invite applications with senior faculty and established investigators serving as Program Directors and experienced mentors who could foster the development of careers of PRIDE program participants.

This FOA will also support a Coordination Core  to facilitate coordination of education and evaluation activities between awardees. Collaborative interactions among the investigators will be an integral part of the program.

This Notice encourages investigators with expertise in mentorship and faculty development to begin to consider applying for this renewal FOA.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOT BEING SOLICITED AT THIS TIME.
