NICHD INSTITUTIONAL TRAINING GRANT POLICIES

Release Date: April 10, 2002

NOTICE: NOT-HD-02-006

National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD)

The purpose of this notice is to summarize for grantees and potential
applicants several policies of the National Institute of Child Health and
Human Development (NICHD) regarding NRSA Institutional Training Grants (T32).

Application Receipt, Review, and Award:

The NICHD has a single receipt date for all Institutional Training Grant
(T32) applications: May 10. Applications are evaluated by a peer review
group convened by the NICHD Division of Scientific Review and receive second
level review at the next January meeting of the National Advisory Child
Health and Human Development Council. Awards are typically made on May 1.

This schedule applies to all new, revised, and competing continuation T32
applications.

MENTOR Awards:

To recognize our most successful Institutional Training Grants, NICHD has
introduced the NICHD MENTOR Award for Excellence in Research Training. The
MENTOR Award consists of two competitive phases of up to five years each.
Recipients who successfully complete the first phase will be eligible to
apply for the second phase using an abbreviated application format, reducing
the burden of the application process for the training program and for
reviewers. The application will undergo an accelerated review process
featuring expedited peer review. You may find more information on the MENTOR
Award on the NICHD website at
http://www.nichd.nih.gov/funding/mech_training.htm.

Procedures to Enhance the Inclusion of Individuals from Underrepresented
Minority Groups in NICHD-supported Institutional Training Grants:

These procedures, announced in the NIH Guide in January 2002
(https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-HD-02-004.html), will
enable the NICHD to identify and recognize programs that demonstrate the
greatest commitment to the training of underrepresented minorities, and that
have been most successful in their endeavors.
