Purpose

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive Diseases and Kidney, intends to promote a new initiative by publishing a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to solicit applications for a Centers program that would provide a coordinated arena for multidisciplinary interactions between basic and clinical scientists in understanding the underlying etiology and the development, treatment, diagnosis, and prevention of specific clinically-oriented urologic disorders or diseases within NIDDK mission interests. The Centers program will also serve as a national resource for career development of young scientists electing to pursue research in benign urology. Finally, Center investigators are expected to participate in important community outreach and education efforts to increase awareness and convey the importance and implications of their research activities to the general public.

This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.

The FOA is expected to be published in September 2012 with an expected receipt date in December 2012.

This FOA will utilize the U54 activity code. Details of the planned Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) are provided below.

Research Initiative Details

This Notice encourages investigators with expertise in benign urological disease and expertise in managing cooperative programs to begin to consider applying for this new FOA.

The proposed Centers program will consist of a minimal number of Research Centers and a single Coordinating Unit that will function with the NIDDK under a cooperative agreement as a multi-center cooperative research program. Within this consortium Center Directors are expected to work with NIDDK staff to promote and facilitate research collaborations and interactions within and between Centers, and with the NIDDK Multidisciplinary K12 Urologic Research (KURe) Career Development Program, and the research community to develop a national network that accelerates bidirectional knowledge between the laboratory and the clinic. The ultimate goal of the Centers program is to improve urological health through the enhanced communication, innovation and research excellence. Research Centers are charged with carrying out research to discover and develop promising new leads for understanding etiology or the prevention, diagnosis, treatment of benign urological disease or disorders. Research Centers shall also provide the research infrastructure to support collaborative research projects, support the development of young scientists, and recruit established investigators not traditional involved in urological research. The Coordinating Unit is expected to house and maintain websites and databases, carry out administrative tasks and organize consortium meetings, and provide centralize access to biomedical cores of the Research Centers. The Coordinating Unit will distribute funds and provide financial management of the Collaborative Research Project and Pilot & Feasibility programs.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOT BEING SOLICITED AT THIS TIME.
