Purpose

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) announces the availability of an expanded variety of bulk marijuana products through the NIDA Drug Supply Program (DSP).  Information provided in this Notice is intended to allow research investigators interested in using marijuana products in their research programs to determine the resources available.

In response to increased interest in the scientific community in conducting studies with marijuana of varying cannabinoid content, in particular cannabidiol (CBD), the DSP in 2014 produced several new strains of marijuana varying in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and CBD content.

Detailed information on the specific strains available can be found at Marijuana Plant Material Available from the NIDA Drug Supply Program. NIDA may be able to provide marijuana of different constituent ratios than those provided in the table by blending batches.

Investigators wishing to obtain marijuana from the NIDA DSP are required to prepare a request package, per the following ordering guidelines: http://www.drugabuse.gov/ordering-guidelines-marijuana-marijuana-cigarettes.

Also, as a Schedule I controlled substance under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), marijuana use in research requires registration with the Drug Enforcement Agency. For more information, see CFR 1301.18 DEA, Research Protocols. For information on how to obtain a required Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration for use of schedule 1 substances, please see: http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/drugreg/reg_apps/225/225_instruct.htm.
