Body Here Cells transcribe thousands of RNAs that do not appear to encode proteins.  The neuronal functions of these noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) are for the most part unknown.  However recent work indicates that some ncRNAs regulate processes such as neuronal fate specification and dendritic spine development, and are therefore likely to be important in a variety of drug-induced brain and neuronal changes associated with drug addiction.  To support and further explore this area of research, NIDA intends to release an RFA in Fall 2007 with applications expected in March 2008. The goal of this RFA, which will utilize the R03 and R01 grant mechanisms, is to stimulate research investigating the role of ncRNAs and other post-transcriptional regulatory mechanisms in neuroplasticity and processes relevant to addiction.
