National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), (http://www.nida.nih.gov )

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) intends to publish a Request for Applications (RFA) in the fall of 2007, with review and funding expected by the end of fiscal year 2008 (September 30, 2008), for small research grant applications (R03s) to advance knowledge and understanding about HIV/AIDS and drug abuse among men who have sex with men (MSM) participating in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS). Initiated in 1984 by the NIAID and NCI, MACS serves as a major source of information on the natural history and epidemiology of HIV/AIDS among MSM, including information on HIV-1 acquisition and transmission; the pathogenesis of opportunistic infections associated with HIV; HIV-related malignancies and disease progression; and health, behavioral, and adverse outcomes directly or indirectly related to HAART. In recognition of the important potential of MACS for understanding HIV/AIDS and drug abuse, NIDA will issue this RFA for small research grants (R03s) that complement and extend MACS to understand the natural history and epidemiology of drug abuse and HIV/AIDS over the life course, to examine drug-use related health and medical consequences associated with HIV/AIDS and its treatment, and to pilot social and behavioral studies that can lead to new approaches in HIV prevention interventions and drug abuse and HIV/AIDS treatment. Interested investigators will be requested to submit a letter of intent to NIDA and are strongly encouraged to familiarize themselves with the larger MACS history, procedures, forms for proposed research, human subjects protocols, and other information, available at: http://statepi.jhsph.edu/macs/macs.html
