Notice of Availability of NIDA Genetics Consortium (NGC) Samples for Access by Qualified Investigators through NIDA Center for Genetic Studies

Notice Number: NOT-DA-07-019

Key Dates
Release Date: July 23, 2007

Issued by
National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), (http://www.nida.nih.gov)

The purpose of this notice is to announce the dates when DNA samples and clinical data collected by the NIDA Genetic Consortium are available for access by qualified scientific investigators.

Background

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Center for Genetics Studies is a repository of biosamples and associated data that was created by NIDA to advance the study of the human genetics of drug addiction vulnerability. NIDA is funding numerous human genetics research projects aimed at identifying the genes that confer susceptibility to drug abuse, drug addiction, and drug abuse-related behaviors. Since progress in scientific understanding depends upon free and open exchange of knowledge, NIDA established the NIDA Center for Genetic Studies repository to facilitate timely access by other researchers to the primary data and biomaterials generated by these studies. Analysis of the data and materials in the repository by other scientists may stimulate further research, speeding the identification and characterization of the genes that contribute to addiction, and related behaviors as well as other diseases, conditions, or behaviors. Knowledge of the specific genes involved may eventually lead to development of novel therapeutic strategies and agents, and to improvement of preventive interventions of these costly and devastating public health burdens.

Description and Availability of data and Samples

For Description of projects in the NIDA Genetic Consortium (NGC), the dates when samples and clinical data are available and Principal Investigator contact information click http://zork.wustl.edu/nida/study_descriptions/link.htm.  NIDA, in consultation with the NGC and with other members of the biomedical research community, has established procedures governing access to the materials stored in the NIDA Center for Genetic Studies repository.

Process for Gaining Access

Access is gained by approval of an Access Request that is reviewed by an outside panel of experts, and by obtaining local IRB approval.  For further details about the process see http://www.nida.nih.gov/about/organization/genetics/GeneticDistPol.html.  Upon approval, access to Clinical Data and DNA samples will be provided by the NIDA Center for Genetic Studies.
