Notice Number: NOT-CA-10-029

Key Dates
Release Date:  July 12, 2010

Issued by
National Cancer Institute (NCI) (http://www.cancer.gov/)

PURPOSE OF THE NOTICE:

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS) intends to publish a new Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to provide support for core functions of Cancer Epidemiology Cohorts (CECs). Specifically, this FOA will support either creation of new CECs or the continued maintenance of previously established CECs supported by the Epidemiology and Genetics Research Program (EGRP), DCCPS.  New CEC applicants as well as past and current CEC awardees seeking support for the core functions of CECs that are currently or were previously supported by  EGRP grants will be invited to apply.

The FOA for the CECs is expected to be published in the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts in Summer of 2010.

This Notice is to encourage investigators who have the appropriate backgrounds and capabilities to begin planning to submit applications in response to the FOA.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOT BEING SOLICITED AT THIS TIME.

OVERVIEW OF THE INITIATIVE:

The goal of the forthcoming FOA is to provide support for the core functions of CECs and facilitate programmatic coordination and evaluation of the CECs’ portfolio. Research projects relying on a given cohort’s infrastructure will continue to be supported separately through investigator-initiated grant mechanisms (R01, P01, etc.). This FOA does not provide funding for CEC research projects.

For the purpose of the FOA, a CEC is defined as either: 1) a cohort of at least 10,000 study participants that  is intended to examine multiple exposures and study participant characteristics, and one or multiple types of incident cancer, or 2) a cohort of at least the same size as destibed in number one, and designed to study cancer-related outcomes among persons diagnosed with cancer.  For this FOA, cancer related outcomes among cancer survivors include, but are not limited to, cancer recurrence, development of new primaries, survival and physical health conditions, chronic diseases related to the cancer, and cancer-directed therapy, or its consequences.  Occupational cohorts will be excluded from this forthcoming FOA because they typically have a limited number of focused exposures assessed.

Note that the forthcoming FOA is designed to support only the establishment of new cohorts or the activities needed to maintain or upgrade CEC core functions (such as recruitment, retention, and biospecimen collection) and methodological research to validate or evaluate new or existing approaches to core infrastructure functions.
