ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPLEMENTS TO SUPPORT THE BIO-ACTIVE NUTRIENT GENE EXPRESSION OMNIBUS PROJECT RELEASE DATE: April 11, 2003 NOTICE: NOT-CA-03-027 National Cancer Institute (NCI) (http://www.nci.nih.gov/) The Division of Cancer Prevention (DCP) of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) announces the availability of funds to support a program to supplement NCI-funded research project (R01), MERIT (R37), cooperative agreement (U01) program project (P01) grants, NCI Cancer Center (P30) or SPORE (P50) grants to assist with the collection of tissue samples, isolation of RNA and shipment to NCI for RNA expression analysis by a dedicated microarray facility operated by the Center for Cancer Research and the Division of Cancer Prevention. This effort, known as the Bio-Active Nutrient Gene Expression Omnibus (BANGEO) project, will support collaborative activities between ongoing NCI- supported studies examining the effects of bio-active nutrients associated with cancer prevention and the microarray facilities of the NCI Advanced Technology Center, as well as the gene expression analysis resources available under the auspices of the NCI Center for Bioinformatcs (NCICB). At this time the species eligible for this effort are rat, mouse and human. NCI-funded investigators whose research involves investigations of the effects of nutrients and who do not currently have funding to examine the effects of gene expression as part of their ongoing grant are eligible. The original peer review-approved goals do not need to mention microarray analysis. This project is designed to take advantage of new opportunities afforded by the establishment of the microarray center and the ongoing efforts in bioinformatics at the NCICB and the National Center for Biotechnology Information. The bio- active nutrient proposed for study must be within the scope of the research originally approved by peer review. No funds will be available for additional animal or human subjects other than those already being treated. Funds will be available through administrative supplements. A full description of the BANGEO project, guidelines, and instructions for submission can be found at the following web site: http://www3.cancer.gov/prevention/nutrition/funding.html. It details the opportunities available to NCI grantees for the identification of nutrient-dependent changes in gene expression through collaborative activities with the Advanced Technology Center, which will be funded with administrative supplements to their active grants. It also provides mechanisms for requesting these supplements as well as specific program requirements for eligibility. Requests for BANGEO supplemental support will be accepted on May 15, 2003, on November 15, 2003, March 15, 2004, on November 15, 2004, and on March 15, 2005. INQUIRIES Investigators funded by any division in NCI who are interested in the activities described here are highly encouraged to contact their NCI program director whose name and telephone number are cited in the latest Notice of Grant Award to solicit advice about the appropriateness of the request.
