NIAID CAREER DEVELOPMENT AWARDS IN EPIDEMIOLOGY AND OUTCOMES RESEARCH RELEASE DATE: June 4, 2004 NOTICE: NOT-AI-04-033 (See Notice NOT-AI-08-040) National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) (http://www.niaid.nih.gov/) PURPOSE To announce that NIAID will support Mentored Research Scientist Development (K01) awards (see http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-00-019.html) in the research areas presented in this notice. To encourage submission of Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01) and Independent Scientist Development Award (K02) (see http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-00-020.html) applications in clinical research in the areas of: o Epidemiology o Modeling Techniques, and o Outcomes Research Clinical Research: NIH defines human clinical research as: (1) Patient- oriented research. Research conducted with human subjects (or on material of human origin such as tissues, specimens and cognitive phenomena) for which an investigator (or colleague) directly interacts with human subjects. Excluded from this definition are in vitro studies that utilize human tissues that cannot be linked to a living individual. Patient-oriented research includes: (a) mechanisms of human disease, (b) therapeutic interventions, (c) clinical trials, or (d) development of new technologies. (2) Epidemiologic and behavioral studies. (3) Outcomes research and health services research. Note: Studies falling under Exemption 4 for human subjects research are not considered clinical research by this definition. NIAID considers such research in epidemiology, outcomes research and modeling techniques involving human data of extreme importance in furthering our scientific mission in allergy, immunology, transplantation, microbiology, and infectious diseases, including AIDS, particularly in the career development of young scientists. K01 applications should be submitted by individuals who are more junior in terms of their research career, while more established researchers with other sources of funding, should apply for the K02 award. In exceptional cases PI's effort may be reduced from 75% to 25-50% for K02 award involving mentoring. INQUIRIES Inquiries are strongly encouraged. Opportunities to clarify any issues or questions from potential applicants are welcome. Direct inquiries concerning scope of, and eligibility for, training and career development grants to: Milton J.
