Purpose

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, intends to promote a new initiative by publishing a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to solicit applications from current awardees and new applicants to continue the previously funded “Collaborative Initiative on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders” (CIFASD).  The CIFASD is a multidisciplinary consortium of clinical, basic, and translational research projects established to address the prevention of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD), the diagnosis of the full range of birth defects associated with prenatal alcohol exposure, and ameliorative interventions for affected individuals.

This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.

The FOA is expected to be published in fall 2011 with an expected receipt date in late 2011.

This FOA will utilize the U24 mechanism for applications that will support the consortium as research resources, such as the administrative, technical, informatics and statistics cores. Details of the planned Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) are provided below.

Research Initiative Details

This Notice encourages investigators with expertise and insights into this area of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder to begin to consider applying for this new FOA.

In addition, collaborative investigations combining expertise in behavior and birth defects will be encouraged and these investigators should also begin considering applying for this application.

Among the research resources encouraged in this initiative include but are not limited to administration, management, finance, technical, pathology, informatics, epidemiology, and statistics. This will support the research infrastructure of the research projects (U01) in the accompanying announcement described in NOT-AA-11-006, to improve the translation of existing knowledge of strategies for the prevention and treatment of FASD.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOT BEING SOLICITED AT THIS TIME.
